Yesterday in my advanced adobe indesign class a student asked how to number her chapters subheads tables and figures it can be done but isn t covered in our workbook. Of course if you already know what page the section begins on then it s easy. For example the numbering scheme of a book s front matter table of contents and index may be different from that of its body.
If a number or letter appears before the current page number you inserted it means that a section prefix is included. 2 either right click the page icon or choose numbering section options from the pages panel menu. In that case you need a sort of indesign document table of contents that you can keep open something that would let you navigate from one section to the next quickly.
Perhaps you ll use roman numerals for the preface and regular arabic numerals for the body of the book. Indesign lets you create multiple sections within a document. Indesign has a robust set of numbering tools but most users don t do much more than set up basic numbered lists.
In indesign it is possible to segregate the document into sections to specify different types of page numbers for different types of content. For example if you re creating a book you might want to specify the beginning chapters such as acknowledgements and preface in roman numerals while the actual chapters have normal numbers. Double click the page 1 icon to target the page.
You can get to it from the window menu. But if you have no idea where it is. You can control your document s sections using the pages palette.
